Couples and Families

When partners, or members of a family encounter one another in the context of art therapy there is space for distinct, individuated expression of each person through his/her own creative piece. This process not only allows for unconscious material to surface, but it also gives each person (and the couple or family as a whole) time to express without interruption. With the art therapist’s facilitation, everyone is invited to witness each creative piece and explore it in relation to the other pieces.

Through Creative Encounters, the relationships are addressed on a level that is unique and different from verbal dialogue. Arguments that may be more common in the couple's or the family's daily interactions, take a different form around the art table. Each person can begin to appreciate and be appreciated for their distinct choices, contributions, and needs in the relationship.

Art therapy is very effective between parents and children. Since children often feel more comfortable with the creative process and handling art media than their parents, the relationship is given a new dimension. This shift in dynamic frees up children’s confidence in themselves and their ability to express their needs, frustrations, and ultimately their deep connection with their parents.
